About 4. Maj-/Hassagerkollegiet

Few student residences in Denmark carry as much layered history as the two kollegier sharing the address Bredegade 13B in Frederiksberg. The main building, erected in 1804–06 as a modest manor house, became home first to the Hassager Kollegiet — established in 1900 through the will of Dorthea Hassager as Denmark's earliest women's college residence — and then, half a century later, to the 4. Maj wing. That second building was funded entirely by public donations gathered after the Liberation and named for 4 May 1945, the day German forces in Denmark surrendered. Its 63 rooms remain a living memorial: applicants who can document that a grandparent or great-grandparent was active in the Danish resistance movement receive priority. Applications for 4. Maj close every year on the anniversary itself. The Hassager wing, now open to all University of Copenhagen students regardless of gender, selects new residents through a peer-committee process. Both kollegier are self-governing, with no external management company involved in day-to-day operations.

How to apply

4. Maj: apply at 4maj-hassager.dk by 4 May deadline; include documentation of resistance-fighter heritage if applicable. Hassager: watch KUnet announcements, application by motivated letter, resident committee selects.
