Christianshavn (Indre By) · Kollegiernes Kontor i København (KKIK)
Kollegiet Sofiegården occupies a block on Christianshavn with a history as dramatic as its canal-side setting. The site was squatted in 1965 by young activists who declared "Republikken Sofiegården," and the community that formed there helped inspire the founding of Christiania in 1971. The current kollegium, designed by Box 25 Arkitekter and completed in 1972, wraps three wings around a courtyard: a postmodern new build from Dronningensgade to Sofiegade, and the listed 18th-century Steinfass Gård on Overgaden Oven Vandet, just metres from the inner harbour canal.
Together they hold 156 flats — from compact single rooms to three-bedroom family apartments. Two buildings are national heritage-listed. Residents govern themselves through monthly beboermøde meetings, play in a football team, and frequent Sofiekælderen, the on-site pub in the Steinfass basement. The nearest metro is Christianshavn Station, a seven-minute walk. A major renovation of the facades, windows and technical systems is planned for 2026–2028. The three-year waiting list reflects how keenly the address is sought.
Historic canal-side district between Indre By and Amager. Quiet, picturesque streets, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and the alternative community of Freetown Christiania.
