Amager · Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS)
The building at Amager Boulevard 115 was, from 1921 to 1978, where every Danish coin in circulation was struck. The Royal Coin Mint — Den Kongelige Mønt — operated heavy industrial presses here until production ceased, after which the complex went through multiple renovation phases before opening as a kollegium in 2013. The four-wing layout was not designed for student housing: the wings were production and storage buildings, and the large courtyard between them was a working yard. Today that courtyard is the social heart of a community of 250 students.
The apartment structure at Mønten is deliberately generous compared to other DIS kollegier — each resident gets a private kitchenette, private toilet, and private shower, with apartments ranging from 27 to 44 m² net. Mønten is also the only DIS kollegium where apartments are officially suited for couples or pairs who want to share. Exterior-facing common hallways mean you pass your neighbours every day, creating an easy casual community without forced communal living.
For a subletter, the location hits a sweet spot: the Islands Brygge and Amagerbro Metro stations are both just around the corner, placing you 5 minutes from the city center on the M1/M2 lines. Stadsgraven's green embankment walks are minutes from the front door, and both Christianshavn and Islands Brygge's harbour-front life are easily walkable or cycleable. Housing benefit (boligstøtte) is available here — uncommon among DIS kollegier.
South of the city center, home to Copenhagen University's main campus (KUA) and the IT University (ITU). Close to the metro, the beach at Amager Strandpark, and the airport.
