Ørestad · Independent foundation
Tietgenkollegiet is one of the most photographed student dormitories in the world. Designed by Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects and opened in 2006, the circular building in Ørestad Nord took its form from the communal circular dwellings of the Hakka people in southern China and the Viking ring fortresses of Denmark. Its 360 rooms line the outer ring on six floors, all facing the surrounding city; shared kitchens and balconies face inward to the central courtyard, where willow trees grow. The facade combines tombak copper panels with oiled American oak sliding screens. Funded by Nordea-fonden and operated by the self-governing Fonden Tietgenkollegiet, the building won the RIBA European Award in 2007 and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award. It sits next to KU Amager, the IT-University, and the protected Amager Fælled, with Islands Brygge metro station nearby. Admission is by motivated application only; subletting is allowed for one period of up to six months.
